CASE STUDY: BIRD CLEANING STATION

Improving the oil spill response capacity in the Baltic Sea

Bird cleaning station – Finland leading the way

The cleaning and treatment station for birds affected by oil spills was designed to improve the oil spill response capacity in the Baltic Sea. Finland is among the frontrunners in treating birds smeared with oil.

The movable container system is the first of its kind in the entire world, and has attracted international attention in various European countries, in the United States, and Brazil.

The bird cleaning station comprising three standard-length freight containers and two tents can process approximately 100–150 oil-smeared birds per day when fully operational. The equipment of the containers was designed in cooperation with the Finnish Environment Institute, the Eastern Uusimaa Emergency Services Department, and the World Wildlife Fund.

The unit is placed under the Eastern Uusimaa Emergency Services Department in Porvoo.
